You may not be surprised when you think of the stunning underwater world of the Maldives, but the truth is, there is also a diverse array of terrestrial wildlife too! Read on to explore the variety of fascinating animals that call this tropical paradise their home, above and under the waterline.

1. White-tailed Tropicbird: With its elegant white plumage and distinctive elongated tail feathers, the White-tailed Tropicbird is a graceful aerial acrobat of the Maldivian skies. These seabirds can often be spotted gliding effortlessly above Fushifaru, their long tail streamers trailing behind them like wisps of cloud.

2. Spinner Dolphins: The Maldives is famous for its spinner dolphins, which can be spotted frolicking in the waters surrounding Fushifaru. These playful creatures are also known for their acrobatic displays, often leaping out of the water and spinning through the air, much to the delight of our guests.

3. Hermit Crabs: On the sandy shores of Fushifaru, you’ll often encounter the humble hermit crabs scuttling along the beach in search of shelter. These fascinating creatures use discarded shells as protective homes, carrying them wherever they go as they explore the coastal landscape.

4. Green Sea Turtles: One of the most beloved inhabitants of the Maldives is the graceful green sea turtle. These gentle giants can often be seen gliding through the ocean waters or nesting on the sandy shores of our island. Green sea turtles are an iconic symbol of Lhaviyani Atoll, as the area is known for its abundance of them.

5. Fruit Bats: As dusk descends upon the Maldives, the sky comes alive with the fluttering wings of fruit bats. These nocturnal creatures play a vital role in pollination and seed dispersal, making them essential contributors to the island’s ecosystem.

6. Manta Rays: The Maldives is a hotspot for manta ray encounters, offering visitors the chance to witness these magnificent creatures up close. At Fushifaru, the peak season to spot Mnatas is October to November, where manta rays gracefully glide through the channels, filter-feeding on plankton and captivating divers and snorkellers with their beauty and grace.

7. The Grey Heron: The Grey Heron is a masterful hunter, patiently stalking its prey in shallow lagoons of the Maldives. With a wingspan that can stretch up to six feet, the Grey Heron cuts a striking silhouette against the backdrop of sun-kissed horizons, embodying the timeless beauty and tranquillity of Fushifaru’s landscape.

From the depths of the ocean to the lush landscapes of the islands, Fushifaru is a paradise teeming with life in all its forms. Whether you’re diving in underwater coral gardens or exploring the tropical islands, you’ll find yourself immersed in the wonders of nature at every turn.

Experience the Magic of Manta Ray Season

The month of October ushers in a magical time at Fushifaru Maldives – a season eagerly awaited by divers, snorkellers and marine enthusiasts alike. From October to November, the waters surrounding our idyllic island transform into a playground for one of the ocean’s most majestic creatures: the manta ray.

During these months, the nutrient-rich waters of the Lhaviyani Atoll attract an abundance of plankton, the primary food source for manta rays. This seasonal phenomenon brings large numbers of manta rays to the area, making it one of the best times to witness these gentle giants in their natural habitat.

Located just a stone’s throw away from Fushifaru, Fushifaru Thila is renowned as a world-class dive site, particularly for spotting manta rays. The Thila (an underwater pinnacle) is home to a cleaning station – a unique area where manta rays gather to be cleaned by smaller fish, like wrasses, that nibble away parasites and dead skin. Watching these graceful creatures as they glide effortlessly through the water, performing their underwater ballet, is an experience like no other.

Diving or snorkelling at Fushifaru Thila during manta ray season is an experience you’ll cherish for a lifetime. Imagine descending into the warm, crystal-clear waters, surrounded by vibrant coral reefs, only to find yourself in the company of these incredible creatures. Manta rays are known for their curiosity and often come close to divers, providing an unparalleled experience and fantastic photo opportunities.

Our experienced dive team at Fushifaru Maldives is on hand to guide you through this breathtaking experience. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or a beginner looking to snorkel, we ensure a safe and unforgettable encounter with these majestic rays.

With the manta ray season fast approaching, there’s no better time to book your stay at Fushifaru Maldives. Our luxurious villas, world-class amenities, and breathtaking natural surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable holiday. Don’t miss the opportunity to witness one of the ocean’s most inspiring spectacles right at our doorstep.

4 Unique Dining Experiences to Try at Fushifaru Maldives

Dining in the Maldives is about far more than what appears on the plate.

With white-sand beaches, turquoise lagoons and spectacular Indian Ocean sunsets as the backdrop, a meal can become one of the most memorable experiences of your holiday.

At Fushifaru Maldives, dining goes beyond the traditional restaurant setting. From breakfast served in the privacy of your villa pool to dinner on a secluded sandbank, each experience offers a different way to enjoy the beauty of the Maldives.

Here are four unique dining experiences at Fushifaru Maldives to add to your island escape.

1. Sandbank Dining in the Maldives

Few experiences feel more quintessentially Maldivian than dining on a secluded stretch of white sand surrounded by the Indian Ocean.

Fushifaru’s Sandbank Dining experience combines complete privacy with one of the most extraordinary natural settings in Lhaviyani Atoll.

As the sun begins to set, a beautifully prepared table awaits on the sandbank, creating an intimate setting for couples celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary or simply a special evening together.

With the sound of the ocean surrounding you and uninterrupted views in every direction, the setting becomes just as memorable as the meal itself.

For travellers searching for a truly romantic dining experience in the Maldives, a private sandbank dinner belongs firmly on the bucket list.

2. Start the Day With a Floating Breakfast

Breakfast in paradise becomes even better when you do not have to leave your villa.

Fushifaru’s Floating Breakfast allows guests to enjoy a generous morning spread served on a floating tray in the privacy of their own villa pool.

Fresh fruits, pastries and breakfast favourites arrive surrounded by blue skies, tropical greenery and the peaceful atmosphere of the island.

It is an opportunity to slow down and enjoy the morning completely at your own pace.

Floating breakfasts have become one of the most iconic Maldives luxury holiday experiences, and at Fushifaru they offer the perfect excuse for a leisurely morning beside the pool.

3. Romantic Beach Dinner Under the Stars

The Maldives has a way of making even an ordinary evening feel romantic.

A Romantic Beach Dinner at Fushifaru Maldives takes that atmosphere one step further.

With a private table set directly on the sand, couples can dine beneath the stars while the Indian Ocean provides the soundtrack for the evening.

A carefully prepared menu and personalised setting transform dinner into an experience designed entirely around the two of you.

Whether you are celebrating your honeymoon, an anniversary, a proposal or simply your time together in the Maldives, a private beach dinner is one of those experiences that captures exactly why the destination is considered one of the most romantic places in the world.

4. Discover Sushi Dhoni

One of Fushifaru’s most distinctive dining experiences brings together Japanese flavours and a uniquely Maldivian setting.

Sushi Dhoni presents beautifully prepared sushi and sashimi on a traditional Maldivian dhoni-inspired presentation, allowing guests to enjoy an elegant sushi experience from the comfort and privacy of their villa.

It is a playful meeting of cultures: Japanese culinary craftsmanship presented with a distinctly Maldivian sense of place.

For sushi lovers looking for something beyond the traditional restaurant experience, Sushi Dhoni adds an unexpected touch to an island afternoon or evening.

Dining Experiences That Become Holiday Memories

What makes dining in the Maldives special is the combination of food, location and atmosphere. At Fushifaru Maldives, the island itself becomes part of every experience.

A breakfast tray floating gently across your pool, a table beneath the stars or a secluded sandbank surrounded by endless blue transforms a meal into something you will remember long after returning home. And that is the beauty of destination dining. It is not simply about where you eat.

It is about where you were, who you were with and how that moment made you feel.

Coral Reef Restoration in the Maldives: A Hopeful Future at Fushifaru

The coral reefs of the Maldives are at the heart of the country’s extraordinary natural beauty.

Beneath the turquoise waters surrounding our islands lies an ecosystem that supports an incredible diversity of marine life, while also helping protect islands and coastlines.

At Fushifaru Maldives, located in the pristine Lhaviyani Atoll, protecting this fragile underwater world is an important part of our commitment to sustainability. In 2020, we launched our Coral Propagation Project with the aim of supporting coral reef restoration and helping regenerate areas of reef surrounding the island.

Our Coral Propagation Project

With the support of our dive team and in-house marine biologist, broken coral fragments were carefully attached to specially designed coral frames before being placed on the ocean floor within Fushifaru’s lagoon.

Rather than allowing naturally broken coral fragments to disappear beneath the sand, coral propagation gives them an opportunity to establish themselves, grow and eventually contribute to a healthier reef ecosystem.

Over the years, our coral frames have continued to develop, becoming home to growing corals and attracting marine life around the lagoon.

Increasing Coral Biodiversity at Fushifaru

One of the most encouraging developments has been the increased diversity surrounding our coral restoration area.

According to our marine biology team, the project has helped introduce different coral species and phenotypes into the lagoon, encouraging a more varied ecosystem.

“We have increased the genetic variability up to 60% in our lagoon, and the biodiversity is also increasing,” explains Natalia Fernández Cabrera, our in-house marine biologist, Marine Zoologist, Exotic Vet Technician and Diving Instructor.

Species introduced through the project have included Montipora capricornis and Acropora muricata, adding greater variety to the reef environment surrounding Fushifaru.

Natalia explains that introducing different coral species alongside existing varieties can help create new colonies and contribute to a more diverse reef ecosystem.

Why Coral Reef Restoration Matters in the Maldives

Coral reefs are among the world’s most important marine ecosystems.

In the Maldives, they provide habitats for countless species of fish and marine life while also contributing to the natural protection of our islands.

However, coral reefs around the world face growing pressure from factors including rising ocean temperatures, coral bleaching, pollution and other environmental changes.

Coral propagation cannot solve these challenges alone, but carefully managed restoration projects can help damaged reef areas recover while supporting biodiversity and creating greater awareness about the importance of marine conservation.

At Fushifaru, our coral frames offer a living example of how small, continued actions can contribute to the wider protection of the marine environment.

Discovering the Coral Frames at Fushifaru

The project has also become an opportunity for our guests to learn more about marine conservation in the Maldives.

Guests can snorkel around the coral frames and observe their development while discovering the extraordinary underwater world of Lhaviyani Atoll.

Seeing coral restoration first-hand can create a much deeper understanding of how delicate these ecosystems are—and why protecting them matters.

For many guests, a snorkelling experience becomes more than simply spotting colourful fish. It becomes an opportunity to understand the reef, its role within the Maldivian environment and the importance of preserving it for future generations.

Creating a More Sustainable Future for Our Reefs

Several years after the launch of our Coral Propagation Project, watching the coral frames continue to grow gives us hope for the future.

The project reflects our wider commitment to protecting the environment surrounding Fushifaru and demonstrates what can be achieved through consistent conservation efforts, education and care for the ocean.

There is still much more work to be done to protect the world’s coral reefs. However, every healthy coral colony, every restored section of reef and every person inspired to care for the ocean represents progress.

At Fushifaru Maldives, we believe we all have a role to play in protecting the extraordinary environment that makes the Maldives so special.

Together, we can help create a more hopeful future for our coral reefs.
