Wonderful Wildlife at Fushifaru Maldives

Did you know that our exquisite island is home to a variety of beautiful wildlife? You may not be surprised when you think of the stunning underwater world of the Maldives, but the truth is, there is also a diverse array of terrestrial wildlife too! Read on to explore the variety of fascinating animals that call this tropical paradise their home, above and under the waterline.

1. White-tailed Tropicbird: With its elegant white plumage and distinctive elongated tail feathers, the White-tailed Tropicbird is a graceful aerial acrobat of the Maldivian skies. These seabirds can often be spotted gliding effortlessly above Fushifaru, their long tail streamers trailing behind them like wisps of cloud.

2. Spinner Dolphins: The Maldives is famous for its spinner dolphins, which can be spotted frolicking in the waters surrounding Fushifaru. These playful creatures are also known for their acrobatic displays, often leaping out of the water and spinning through the air, much to the delight of our guests.

3. Hermit Crabs: On the sandy shores of Fushifaru, you'll often encounter the humble hermit crabs scuttling along the beach in search of shelter. These fascinating creatures use discarded shells as protective homes, carrying them wherever they go as they explore the coastal landscape.

4. Green Sea Turtles: One of the most beloved inhabitants of the Maldives is the graceful green sea turtle. These gentle giants can often be seen gliding through the ocean waters or nesting on the sandy shores of our island. Green sea turtles are an iconic symbol of Lhaviyani Atoll, as the area is known for its abundance of them.

5. Fruit Bats: As dusk descends upon the Maldives, the sky comes alive with the fluttering wings of fruit bats. These nocturnal creatures play a vital role in pollination and seed dispersal, making them essential contributors to the island's ecosystem.

6. Manta Rays: The Maldives is a hotspot for manta ray encounters, offering visitors the chance to witness these magnificent creatures up close. At Fushifaru, the peak season to spot Mnatas is October to November, where manta rays gracefully glide through the channels, filter-feeding on plankton and captivating divers and snorkellers with their beauty and grace.

7. The Grey Heron: The Grey Heron is a masterful hunter, patiently stalking its prey in shallow lagoons of the Maldives. With a wingspan that can stretch up to six feet, the Grey Heron cuts a striking silhouette against the backdrop of sun-kissed horizons, embodying the timeless beauty and tranquillity of Fushifaru’s landscape.
